According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), Allstate is the fourth largest auto insurer in the United States behind State Farm, Geico and Progressive. In 2021, the company earned $27.2 billion in premiums and has a 10.4% share of the auto insurance market.
Allstate was founded in 1931 and sold auto insurance through the Sears catalog. Allstate insurance policies are available nationwide, although discounts and additional coverage vary by state.

The NAIC reported that State Farm had 15.9% of the U.S. auto insurance market in 2021, earning more than $41.6 billion in auto insurance premiums for the year. Drivewise offers challenges such as keeping your speed below 80 mph and avoiding hard braking for specific periods of time. Allstate’s usage-based insurance product is available in 49 states, although drivers in Arkansas, New York and North Carolina may not qualify for all discounts.
Drive Safe & Save™ is State Farm’s usage-based program. People who sign up for the program get an immediate discount, and drivers can save up to 30% by maintaining safe driving habits. Drive Safe & Save tracks acceleration and cornering speeds, as well as the frequency of sudden braking. It also tracks the time of day you drive and how often you use your phone in the car.
Drive Safe & Save is not available to drivers in California, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Similar to Allstate’s usage-based program, North Carolina drivers may not qualify for some Drive Safe & Save discounts.

Allstate and State Farm have an A+ rating from the BBB, although the BBB customer ratings for both companies are very low. Geico has the highest reputation score in the industry at 9.8 out of 10.0. Geico’s low rates and many discounts make it a smart choice for any driver.
We give Travelers 9.5 out of 10.0 for its insurance options, making it the highest rated in this category. The company offers comprehensive car insurance at an average cost of $1,595 per year, below the national average of $2,008 per year. Travelers has been in business for over 150 years and has an A++ financial strength rating from AM Best.
