But the new ‘Up to 67’ and ‘Up to 70’ benefit periods have only been around for a few years. Agents have habits like everyone else, and most agents have been used to selling “up to age 65” benefits for decades. We expect that as more people plan for longer careers, longer options will become more popular.

We believe that the cost of this option is simply prohibitive.
Some people choose a limited benefit period. It is much more cost effective to have an annuity term of 2, 5 or 10 years than to have an annuity term until age 65 or older. If you plan based on occupational disability insurance statistics alone, a benefit period of 5 or 10 years will cover the average duration of a claim. It’s also much riskier because if you were permanently disabled it would mean you wouldn’t get your last benefit check for 5 or 10 years instead of at retirement age.
Other people who have a limited benefit policy do so because the insurer has limited the benefit period because their medical history prevents them from getting coverage until age 65 or older. This could be due to high cholesterol, a psychological or nervous history or other medical history that prevents the insurer from offering full coverage.
You never know if they will ever experience a long term disability or what the cause of the disability may be. If we knew this, we would know exactly what type of individual disability insurance to purchase. Since we don’t know, I always recommend getting the longest benefit period you can afford. If your disability only lasts 4.5 years, it would look smart for you to have 5 years of pension benefits, but it won’t look so smart if you had 5 years of pension benefits and you are permanently disabled.
